Discovering Taverna: an itinerary through museums, churches, and enchanting landscapes

Taverna, a characteristic municipality in the Province of Catanzaro, overlooking the gentle slopes of Sila Piccola, guards ancient secrets and a captivating history. With its approximately 2,700 inhabitants, the city’s name itself, derived from the Greek “treis-chenè,” evocatively suggests the idea of three places or three generations of families.

Taverna’s roots delve into antiquity, as evidenced by fascinating archaeological findings unearthed during excavations. Greek coins, dating back to ancient times, depict three tabernacles on one side and a Minotaur on the other, revealing connections to classical mythology. Even more intriguing is the legend intertwined with history, narrating the city’s foundation by the three sisters of Priam, who landed in Sellia Marina after the fall of Troy.

After the Greek period, Taverna became the stage for Roman exploits, while in 852 AD, it suffered the invasion of the Saracens, an event that led to the destruction of many communities, including Taverna itself. The city’s rebirth occurred thanks to the work of the Byzantine general Nikephoros Phokas, but it was with the advent of the Normans that Taverna enriched itself with an excellent defensive system.

Taverna’s history is marked by periods of turmoil. In 1160, during feudal revolts against the Aragonese, the city was once again razed to the ground. Only some time later did a slow reconstruction take place, and in 1443, the Aragonese declared it a demesne land, granting it self-management that persisted in the centuries that followed.

The 19th century was a challenging era for Taverna, with its development hindered by complex historical events: French occupation, the Risorgimento uprisings, the Unification of Italy, and the brigandage. These events contributed to a period of impoverishment that involved not only Taverna but much of Calabria.

Today, Taverna jealously preserves its history, told by the ancient stones that make up its urban fabric and by the glimpses that reveal the beauty of Sila Piccola. A journey through this fascinating town is an immersion in the richness of the past, ready to unveil new secrets at every corner.

Civic museum of Taverna: treasures of art and history

The Civic Museum of Taverna, housed in the former Dominican convent founded in 1465, is a must-visit for art and history enthusiasts. Its exhibition halls, dating from the 17th to the 21st centuries, are adorned with works by masters such as Gregorio and Mattia Preti, Giovan Battista Spinelli, Giovanni and Antonio Sarnelli. The museum tour reveals the history of the ancient building, damaged by the earthquake of 1662 and subsequently restored with Baroque elements. The monumental church of San Domenico, now an integral part of the museum, houses works of inestimable value, including paintings by the ‘Cavalier Calabrese,’ Mattia Preti, stolen in 1970 and later recovered.

In 1989, the Municipality of Taverna approved the establishment of the Civic Museum, which has since enriched the cultural heritage of the region, officially becoming part of the National Museum System in 2023.
